Sometimes, the moments we need most are the ones we don’t plan.
Life has a way of keeping us busy. Between work, family, responsibilities, and all the little things that seem to need our attention, our days can fill up before we even realize it. We make lists, plan our weeks, and try to fit everything into the time we have. Before long, we’re thinking about what needs to happen next instead of enjoying what’s happening right now.
This weekend reminded me how good it feels to let some of that go.
On Saturday, we were able to get together with family we don’t get to see nearly as often as we’d like. We laughed, caught up, and enjoyed being together. I also invited a friend I haven’t been able to spend as much time with lately because life and busy schedules seem to get in the way.
It was one of those days that reminds you just how much you miss people when you don’t see them often enough.
Then, on Sunday, we made the hour-long drive to visit our daughter at college. We brought her a couple of things she needed and took her and her boyfriend out to lunch. Nothing extraordinary or complicated. Just time together, a chance to catch up, and another opportunity to make memories in this season of life.
Somewhere along that drive, I found myself feeling something I hadn’t realized I needed so much.
Peace.
For once, I wasn’t thinking about everything I needed to accomplish when we got home. I wasn’t mentally organizing the week ahead or worrying about all the things waiting for me. I was simply enjoying the moment, knowing we were on our way to spend time with people we love.
There was no elaborate plan for the day. We just did what came next, and somehow, that was exactly what I needed.
I’ve been thinking about that feeling ever since.
How often do we move through our days thinking about the next thing? We finish one task only to start thinking about another. We get through a workday while mentally preparing for everything that needs to happen at home. Even when we’re spending time with the people we love, it’s easy to let our minds wander toward tomorrow’s responsibilities.
I know I’m guilty of it.
There is always something that needs to be done. A house to take care of, animals to tend to, meals to prepare, work to finish, and plans to make. Add in the things we want to do for ourselves and the dreams we’re working toward, and it can feel as though there simply aren’t enough hours in the day.
But this weekend reminded me that life isn’t meant to be one long to-do list.
The people we love won’t always be available on the same weekends we are. Our children grow up, build lives of their own, and begin making their own plans. Friends get busy. Family gatherings become harder to coordinate. Before we know it, the opportunities to all be together can feel fewer and farther between.
That doesn’t mean we have to abandon our responsibilities or stop planning ahead. It simply means we need to remember what all that busyness is for.
We work hard. We take care of our homes. We try to build healthier lives and make room for the things that matter to us. But somewhere in the middle of all of it, we need to make room for living, too.
And sometimes, living looks like an unhurried lunch with your daughter. An afternoon laughing with family. Inviting a friend over even when your calendar is already full. Or taking a drive without spending the entire time thinking about what comes next.
Those moments may seem ordinary, but they’re the ones I want more of.
This week will be a busy one, even though it’s a short workweek for me.
We’re looking forward to a four-day weekend for Family Weekend at our daughter’s college. Friday will be spent preparing for another trip, gathering things she needs from home, and getting ready to enjoy some of the planned activities with her, her boyfriend, and his family.
Then we’ll head back home to tend to our animals before turning around early Saturday morning to tailgate for the college football game with our kids and friends.
There will be plenty to do before we get there. Work still needs to get done, the animals need to be cared for, and the usual responsibilities aren’t going anywhere just because there’s a long weekend on the calendar.
But this time, I’m trying to look at the week a little differently.
Instead of seeing only the long list of things I need to accomplish before Friday, I want to remember what I’m working toward. The busy days are leading to time with our daughter. The extra preparation is making room for a weekend with family and friends. The craziness of getting everything done will be worth it when we finally get to slow down and enjoy being together.
Maybe that’s the shift I needed to make.
Not every busy week is something to get through as quickly as possible. Sometimes, the busyness is part of making room for something wonderful.
And when the moment arrives, I want to be present enough to enjoy it.
I know I’m not the only one trying to balance a full life. We all have responsibilities, deadlines, appointments, and things that can’t simply be pushed aside. We all have days when there doesn’t seem to be enough time to do everything we want to do.
But perhaps we don’t always need to find more time. Perhaps we need to be a little more intentional with the time we have.
That might mean putting the phone down during dinner. Saying yes to a visit with someone you haven’t seen in a while. Taking the scenic route. Leaving a few things on the to-do list until tomorrow so you can enjoy the people sitting right in front of you today.
It might even mean giving yourself permission to have a day without a plan.
We spend so much time trying to make everything work that we sometimes forget to let ourselves simply be.
This weekend, I was reminded how wonderful it feels to step away from the constant thinking, planning, and worrying. To enjoy the people around me. To let the day unfold. To appreciate the time we have together without wishing it away by thinking about what comes next.
I want to carry that feeling into this week and beyond.
Because at the end of the day, I don’t think I’ll look back and wish I’d spent more time checking things off my list. I think I’ll remember the laughter around the table, the lunches with my children, the friends who made time to get together, and the ordinary weekends that became meaningful simply because we were together.
So, if your own days have felt a little too full lately, consider this your gentle reminder to make room for the people you love — and for yourself, too.
The laundry can wait a little longer. The list will still be there tomorrow. Not everything has to be finished before you allow yourself to enjoy your life.
Sometimes, the best thing we can do is stop rushing toward the next thing and appreciate where we are right now.
May you find a little room in your busy days to slow down, enjoy your favorite people, and let life unfold without needing to have every moment planned.
After all, this chapter we’re living right now deserves to be enjoyed, too.
Until next Sunday,
Kristen
